Vision 2030

Following the launch of Vision 2030 in 2016, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has taken decisive steps towards a more sustainable future. A key feature Is protecting 30% of Saudi's land & sea.

Achieving environmental sustainability

"We will direct our efforts towards protecting and rehabilitating our beautiful beaches, natural reserves and islands, making them open to everyone. We will seek the participation of the private sector and government funds in these efforts."

Powered by 100% clean energy

The Kingdom has adopted a forward-facing role in addressing global environmental issues including pollutionand the deterioration of biodiversity. During the Kingdom’s presidency of the G20, the first special working group was established on environmental issues, including two international initiatives:

  • Joined the “Nairobi International Convention on the Removal of Wrecks” 2007

  • Joined the “International Convention on the Control of Harmful Anti-fouling Systems on Ships” 2001

  •  Is providing low-sulfur fuel 0.5% for ships in Arabian Gulf and Red Sea

  • Is establishing renewable energy global hub with the capacity to generate more than 200 gigawatts (GW) of electricity.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has:

Paving the way to Net Zero Emissions by 2060

Achieving Environmental Sustainability

The Middle East & Saudi Green Initiatives aim to implement multiple ambitious initiatives to support international efforts to reduce emissions and increase renewable energy capabilities. This includes programs to raise energy efficiency, provide large-scale investments in clean hydrogen and renewable energy sources, and develop advanced carbon capture technologies.

International Cooperation

Ensure Sustainability

  • Join the Global Oceans Alliance to Eliminate Plastic Waste in Oceans and Beaches.

  • Raise protected areas to more than 30%

  • Protect at least of 30% of the global ocean as Marine Protected Areas by 2030

  • The Red Sea Development Company will lead in sustainable tourism and conservation.

Saudi Arabia Prioritizes:

  • Establish a regional center for Sustainable Development for Fisheries Create

  • Establish a regional Early Storm Warning center

  • Establish a regional Cloud Seeding Program

  • Create an investment fund in order to offer clean energy solutions that would help feed more than 750 million people worldwide.

  • Improve the quality of life and protect future generations in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the region Bridge the gap between public and private sustainability efforts, identifying opportunities for collaboration and innovation.

ACTION MATCHING AMBITION

The Kingdom has contributed more than 4% towards the global target to reduce land degradation and 1% towards the global target for planting one trillion trees.

The Kingdom is engaged in several regional initiatives that are focused on protecting the marine environment:

  • Hosting the Headquarters of the Regional Organisation for the Conservation of the Environment of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden (PERSGA);

  • One of eight member states of the Regional Organisation for the Protection of the Marine Environment on the Arabian Gulf (ROPME); and

  • Supporting the efforts of the Mutual Assistance Centre for Maritime Emergencies and Protection of the Maritime Environment (MEMAC).

GREEN TECHNOLOGIES

  • The Kingdom is working to export clean fuels. The 1st shipment of blue ammonia was exported from Saudi Arabia to Japan, which was 40 tons of high-quality blue ammonia for use in zero-carbon electricity generation. This trial was the world's first for the blue ammonia supply chain and is one of several milestones to achieving a circular carbon economy.

Saudi Arabia is taking a multidimensional approach to emissions reduction.

Ambitious initiatives are being implemented across Saudi Arabia to combat the impacts of climate change and create a cleaner, greener future for all. These include implementing comprehensive energy efficiency programs, making significant investments in clean hydrogen and renewable energy sources, and developing cutting-edge carbon capture technology.

The Kingdom is developing capabilities and facilities to treat wastes from ships in all the Kingdom’s ports to enhance marine preservation efforts. Saudi Arabia is also working with other nations, such as Japan, to develop cleaner fuels such as Blue and Green Hydrogen and Blue Ammonia.

The National Development Fund (NDF) through its supervised entities, contributed to the financing of the largest green hydrogen production plant in the world set to be established in Oxagon city at NEOM.

Green hydrogen represents one of the most prominent investments for the Kingdom as it leads a new chapter into the future.

NEOM Green Hydrogen Company (NGHC)

By harnessing cutting-edge technology and leveraging renewable energy sources, NGHC produces hydrogen through electrolysis, mitigating carbon emissions and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

Located in Oxagon, in Saudi Arabia’s region of NEOM, NGHC boasts an impressive production capacity of 600 tons per day of carbon-free hydrogen by the end of 2026, offering a multitude of applications across various sectors, including transportation, industry, and energy integration.

The project positions the Kingdom as a global frontrunner in the green hydrogen sector, fostering economic growth and creating high-value job opportunities.

In 2020, KSA announced that a green hydrogen plant was being built in The Kingdom as part of NEOM. The $5 billion plant powered exclusively by renewable energy will make Saudi Arabia one of the largest producers of green hydrogen worldwide. On completion, the facility will have the capacity to generate 650 tons of green hydrogen per day, a key component of The Kingdom’s ambition for Neom to become a global centre for renewable energy. It is hoped that this green hydrogen will be transported around the world and showcases Saudi Arabia’s efforts in supporting the green transition.
