On the 19th of November 2024, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia hosted a coffee break during the International Maritime Organization (IMO)'s Council Meeting at its headquarters in London. The event will provide representatives of the IMO’s Member States an opportunity to engage in discussions and exchange views in a relaxed and informal setting, while enjoying traditional Saudi coffee and Arabic sweets. Delegates also received a traditional Saudi finjan, a small coffee cup used to drink Arabic coffee.
This event underscores Saudi Arabia's ongoing commitment to fostering collaboration and dialogue within the IMO, as it continues to play an increasingly influential role in maritime affairs. As an elected Council Member, Saudi Arabia has consistently supported the organisation's goals and initiatives, contributing to the advancement of maritime safety, environmental protection, and the sustainable development of the global maritime industry.
This event also marks an important introduction, as Eng. Kamal Al Junaidi has recently been appointed as the new Permanent Representative of Saudi Arabia to the IMO. Eng. Al Junaidi brings a wealth of experience in maritime policy and regulation, and his appointment signals Saudi Arabia's intention to further strengthen its engagement with the IMO and enhance its contribution to international maritime governance. Representatives of other states will have the opportunity to meet Eng. Al Junaidi and discuss the Kingdom’s ongoing priorities, including its commitment to supporting climate initiatives, enhancing maritime safety, and fostering cooperation among member states.
Saudi Arabia's presence at the IMO, particularly as a Council Member, highlights its dedication to actively participating in shaping the future of the maritime sector. The Kingdom's hosting of the coffee break is a gesture of goodwill, intended to showcase its cultural heritage while reiterating its commitment to building strong relationships with IMO member states. As the IMO continues its efforts to address critical global maritime challenges, Saudi Arabia remains a key partner, advocating for solutions that promote safety, security, and sustainability in the shipping industry. The event will serve as a reminder of the importance of fostering open dialogue and collaboration to achieve shared goals in the maritime sector.
With its strong representation and ongoing initiatives, Saudi Arabia looks forward to continuing its active role in the IMO, working alongside other member states to enhance maritime governance and support the industry's transition towards a more sustainable future.
