The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia attended the International Maritime Organization (IMO) 2024 World Maritime Day Parallel Event (WMDPE) in Barcelona, Spain. Under the patronage of the Government of Spain, the event was held from 20 to 22 October 2024. The WMDPE brought together international maritime leaders and experts to discuss the future of the sector under the IMO’s theme for 2024: "Navigating towards the future: Safety first!" This theme coincided with the 50th anniversary of the SOLAS Convention (Safety of Life at Sea), marking five decades of progress in maritime safety.
The Saudi delegation, led by Eng. Kamal Al Junaidi, General Manager of Maritime and Transport Policies at the Transport General Authority (TGA). Other delegates from TGA attended to represent the Kingdom at the event. Saudi Arabia’s participation reflects active involvement and commitment to the IMO's mission. Saudi Arabia, as an elected IMO Council Member, plays a pivotal role in shaping international maritime standards, underscoring its commitment to addressing global maritime safety and environmental challenges.

Topics included exploring the future of maritime safety and introducing new and adaptive technologies, such as alternative fuels and innovations that support sustainable maritime operations. Additionally, panellists examined the role of the human element, focusing on the importance of ensuring that seafarers are well-prepared for the evolving landscape of maritime challenges. Digital transformation and automation were also highlighted for their revolutionary potential in the shipping industry.
Saudi Arabia’s involvement underscores expanding influence within the maritime sector. Aligned with Vision 2030, the Kingdom’s maritime policies prioritise sustainability, safety, and innovation, positioning Saudi Arabia as a leader in global maritime governance. As an elected IMO Council Member, Saudi Arabia leverages its position to contribute to international standards that support maritime safety and environmental stewardship.
As the world faces evolving maritime challenges, Saudi Arabia’s dedication to fostering international collaboration was clearly demonstrated at the WMDPE. The Kingdom continues to assert itself as a key player on the global maritime stage, advancing critical discussions on safety, sustainability, and the future of the maritime industry.
